Las Leonas pisaron fuerte en el debut de los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto 2015 al derrotar de manera muy contundente a México por 9 a 0, en un partido jugado en el campo de deportes St. George de la Universidad de Toronto.
Agustina Albertario, jugadora oriunda de Almirante Brown tuvo una participación destacada al anotar en dos ocasiones para decorar la goleada. El resto de los goles del equipo dirigido por Capurro fueron convertidos por Macarena Rodríguez; Florencia Habif; Paula Ortiz; Delfina Marino (2)y Noel Barrionuevo (2), respectivamente.
En la segunda fecha, el miércoles, ‘Las Leonas’ se medirán ante el seleccionado local, a partir de las 21 y el viernes 17, en lo que será la última fecha de la primera ronda, se enfrentarán con República Dominicana, a las 19, en tanto que el grupo B está compuesto por Chile, Cuba, Uruguay y Estados Unidos.
Argentina, desde 1987 que el hockey sobre césped femenino disputa los Juegos Panamericanos, ganó seis ediciones y sólo perdió la final de Guadalajara 2011 con Estados Unidos por 4 a 2.
‘Las Leonas’, campeonas mundiales 2002 (Perth, Australia) y 2010 (Rosario), ganaron cuatro medallas olímpicas, dos de plata (Sydney, Australia, 2000 y Londres, Inglaterra 2012) y dos de bronce (Atenas, Grecia, 2004 y Beijing, China, 2008).
En los los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto, que se llevarán a cabo del 10 al 26 de julio, competirán unos 6000 atletas de 41 países en 36 deportes.
