El ex miembro de la Corte Suprema de la Nación, Dr. Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni, fue elegido como Juez de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, durante la Asamblea General de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), que tuvo lugar en Washington DC.
La Cancillería informó que “la decisión del Gobierno Argentino de postular al Dr. Zaffaroni fue tomada no sólo por la relevancia que tiene la Corte Interamericana en la salvaguarda de los derechos humanos en la región, sino también por la larga y frondosa trayectoria del Dr. Zaffaroni en los desarrollos legislativos, jurisprudenciales y políticas públicas en derechos humanos en la Argentina y América Latina”.
El comunicado agrega que “su compromiso con la justicia y su acción por la defensa de las libertades individuales y la libertad de expresión; su ecuanimidad y respeto a las instituciones; sus aportes doctrinarios de excelencia en la teoría y práctica del derecho penal internacional; y su profunda sensibilidad y experiencia en la lucha contra la discriminación, fomentarán una Corte Interamericana plenamente involucrada en la construcción de una región más justa, solidaria e inclusiva”.
“Esta elección -continúa- constituye un gran honor para la República Argentina, ya que significa un reconocimiento de la comunidad internacional al compromiso de nuestro país con las acciones que se llevan adelante en pos del respeto, promoción y protección de los derechos humanos”.
Señala el ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores que “la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos ha sido instrumentada por la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos –que entró en vigor en 1978- como uno de los dos órganos regionales competentes para entender sobre las violaciones a los derechos humanos en el continente americano”.
